EM-1 Application in Ros Luciano Poultry Company in Baras, Rizal

Obnoxious odor and houseflies are the common health and sanitation problem in poultry farms. Obnoxious odor coming from high concentration of decomposing manure, produce gasses like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide which causes respiratory stress, not just on workers as well as in animals living in this condition. Ammonia is an oxidative substance, putrefactive and supports the growth of pathogenic microbes. EM has strong antioxidant effect on manure that resists putrefaction to prevent foul odor. EM also suppresses the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
Houseflies deposit their egg on manure. Maggots (larvae of housefly) develop in moist and warm manure and move to drier areas to pupate.  Adult flies have wings and may transmit disease. Use of EM-1 in manures reduces flies, ticks and other harmful insects’ populations.
EM-1 will not just suppress odor in poultry pen but will also produce high quality of organic manure with no foul odor, which reduces stress factor in animals and enhances immunity against disease that will keep the animals in good health.

November 8, 2011 was the first visit in Ros Luciano Poultry in Sitio Kaysakat, Brgy. Kinugay, Baras, Rizal. More than 38,000 heads of chicken in approximately 2,300 sq.m tunnel vent house.

RECOMMENDED APPLICATION

There are three ways on how to use EM-1 in poultry.
1.      Spraying EMAS in poultry pens especially on manure.
2.      Adding pure EM-1 in drinking water of chickens.
3.      Adding bokashi feed additive or by spraying EM-1 directly to the feeds of chicken.

Note: EM-1 should not be used with other chemical disinfectant.

1.      SPRAYING ONLY ( Application allowed to test)

Spraying is done to eliminate foul odor because of harmful microbes that produces substance like ammonia and other obnoxious gasses. EMAS will suppress the development of harmful microbes therefore production of this obnoxious odor is eliminated.

ACTIVATION OF EM-1 (EMAS means EM Activated Solution)

Materials:

1 L EM-1 Concentrate
1 L Molasses
28 L non-chlorinated water
30 L capacity of water container with sealable airtight cover

Procedure:
  1. In 30 L capacity of container mix 1L molasses to non-chlorinated water until molasses are dissolved.
  2. Add 1L of EM-1 and mix well.
  3. Cover the container tightly and put it on warm or room temperature shaded area without direct sunlight. On the 3rd or 4th day open the container to release the gas and tighten it again.
  4.  Ferment it for 7-10 days.
    1. This EMAS should have sweet sour smell to ensure uncontaminated fermentation. The contaminated EMAS smell’s putrefied and don’t use it.

Note: This EMAS can not be extended again. Only EM-1 can be extended. Harbest and EMRPI can’t warrant the quality and efficacy beyond this recommendation.

ACTUAL APPLICATION: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

1 liter EMAS (EM ACTIVATED SOLUTION) mixed to 50 liters water

Before scattering the chicks to the whole area, effective microorganisms were inoculated by diluting 1 liter of EMAS to 50 liters of water and sprayed it unto floor

Inocullating EMAS

During the growth period, diluted EM activated solution (DEMS) 1:50 was sprayed to the whole area, especially on manure at the rate of approximately 250 ml per square meter once daily.

DEMS was used within the day as advised.

Spraying EMAS diluted 1:50

DAMP AREA

For some areas, there were leaks due to clogging of drinkers. This situation contributes in production of unwanted odor. As a solution diluted EMAS 1:10 (1 liter EMAS to 10 liters of water) was sprayed on damp area. This prevented the putrefactive bacteria to produce odor. But, this same situation was also favorable in development of maggots that all poultry growers don’t want. Immediately application of rice bran, sawdust, coco coir dust or anything that absorbed moisture was advised.
This situation should be avoided
because houseflies likes to reproduce
 in this condition

Empty bottles of soft drinks were used. Bio-supernet (yellow stickers) was sprayed outside the bottle because most insects were attracted to yellow color. Second picture from the left has molasses inside it because houseflies were also attracted to the smell of molasses.

One week before harvesting. Increased number of houseflies. But not as much as previous growing season according to the manager.

Houseflies population is greatly reduced.

The second growing season with EM-1

A day before the actual loading of chicks EMAS diluted 1:50 was sprayed on floor. Since the first day of the chicks EMAS was sprayed regularly unto their manure.
This second season, leak from drinker was immediately prevented by adding rice bran that will absorb too much moisture.  EMAS 1:10 to 1:50 were sprayed on this rice bran to established good microorganisms and prevent the spread of harmful microorganisms that later on will create obnoxious gasses. This also reduced the favorable area where housefly will reproduce.

No maggots in this situation.

TESTIMONIES:

MR. CURTIS BACK- Team Leader
“Ok naman ang amoy sa loob pag-nag spray ng EM-1. Nawawala yung amoy tsaka mas konti yung langaw ngayong grow kumpara sa nakaraan naming, tapos medyo less yung mortality namin.”
“Mas kumonti ang langaw nung naagapan ang mga leak compare nung huling grow kahit na walang screen yung exhaust fan naming ngayong season na ito.”

MR. MATT DOWELL ALIGARBES-In-charge in making EMAS and regularly spraying of EMAS
“Ok naman po ang epekto ng EM-1 kasi pag mag-spray ako nawawala naman yung amoyng dumi sa loob at saka konti ngayon ang langaw kaysa sa last grow naming. Pero kapag di ako nakapagspray bumabalik ang amoy ng dumi.”

According to Matt and Curt, during their previous growing period, especially on its third week, when you enter inside the tunnel vent and went out later on, they also smell unpleasant. They also feel irritation on their eyes when they were inside. But after using EM-1, they no longer feel eye irritation and foul odor is significantly reduced.

MR. TJ AMPIL-General Manager of Ros Luciano Poultry Co.
“It was my first experience to run a tunnel ventilated broiler building and during our first grow, I never expected to see so much flies inside the building which multiplied from thousands to million in days.  We used different types of fly killers to eradicate the growing number of flies but to no avail, we failed.

I consulted different vets and as advised, they told me to use the same brands of fly killer and to double my dosage.   After applying a much higher dosage, there was just a little improvement. Pls note that most of the fly killers are expensive.

These did not stop me from asking other growers and searching from the internet for solutions, I came across an article regarding EM-1 (Effective Microorganism) which was non-toxic and environment friendly that can remove foul odors and flies. I tried to reach the company (Harbest Agribusiness Corporation) and ask them to help me with my problem. In response, a technical team headed by Ms. Mitch was deployed to conduct an inspection.

Immediately after, with the help of Ms. Mitch they mixed EMAS (EM Activated solution) with water and sprayed it inside the building which was loaded with 5 day old chicks. The process was repeated for the next 25 days with a regular visit and teaching from Ms. Mitch.

As a result, odors from chicken manure which produces ammonia and other odor compound was generally gone and minimal flies were seen inside the building.

Now that I know the effectiveness of EM-1 and its environmental benefits, I highly recommend that YOU try it.”

VERY ECONOMICAL and EASY TO PREPARE

Thank you HARBEST!!!

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Continue preventing the clogging of drinkers to avoid leak. If leak was noticed apply any material that absorbs water such as rice bran, rice hulls, coco coir dust or soil immediately. The lower the price of material the better. Since rice bran is more abundant in the area, choose the cheaper quality of rice bran like D3. Spraying of EMAS 1:10 to 1:50 will also help establish good microorganisms these will help prevent the spread of harmful microorganisms that later on create obnoxious gasses. Preventing too much moisture in manure will also reduced the favorable area where housefly will reproduce.
  2. Before loading the chicks, install housefly trapper immediately. Approximately 500 houseflies will be reduced in the population just by trapping one female adult housefly.
  3. Add EM-1 in drinking water of the chicken 2-3 days after the antibiotics. This will greatly help, especially for the last week that they are not spraying EMAS.
