SAVING BORA with EM-1

Saving Bora!

President Duterte gave a stern warning to Boracay residents and commercial establishments to clean up the “Sewer Pool” and gave a marching order to DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu to make sure the mess is cleaned up within six months. For tourists from ChinaTaiwanKorea, US and Europe, it may not be that grave yet, but we can afford only one bad publicity from the international press about coliforms infected shoreline and the tourist dollars will trickle.   The President’s warning is firm and urgent.  We can’t wait for that day when the frequent 30 minutes plane arrival interval to Caticlan airport and the ever busy banka ferries from Caticlan Port to Boracay STOP.

There is a sustainable solution that is cheap and environment friendly…

Dr. Teruo Higa of EM Research Organization (EMRO), OkinawaJapan, has discovered and promoted the use of the tiny friendly microbes called Effective Microorganisms in cleaning up the mess that we humans have inflicted on Mother Earth.  I attached here several articles on how EM had been applied to solve environmental degradation due to garbage, waste water from hotels, households and commercial establishments.  EM has been applied all over the world since the 1970’s.  Whole lakes and rivers had been revitalized and regenerated with the cooperation of the people living around the affected areas.  If it took twenty years of neglect and human greed to develop Boracay, it will take years to clean up the sewer pool completely.  But we better start now.  To effect the clean up immediately, we will need the cooperation of everyone in Boracay to be conscious of their waste disposal and block off illegally tapped sewer lines to the water line and the sea.

Where did this mess start?

Since the first Atis settlers inhabited Boracay, the serene island was home to simple fisher folks. A few families enjoyed the fine white sand then but made world-class tourist destination by a German writer in 1978 in his book about the Philippines.  Since then Boracay experienced the influx of sun loving and fun loving tourists. Undisciplined development followed and grew side by side with them.  Concrete buildings creep into the prestine beaches and the volume of greedy investments forgot the law of nature and started dumping waste materials to the ground and the sea. Each tourist and resident has to pooh and peeh everyday!  Unless these biological wastes are treated and fermented back to be beneficial compost, waste water regenerated into biological safe water, Boracay’s main attraction, its white sand beaches and soothing sea water with the underwater wonders, will become its main destruction.

How does EM works to clean up Boracay?

EM stands for effective microorganism.  These microscopic friends of nature had been cleaning the earth we lived for millions of years.  These are God’s silent warriors to neutralize the abuses of Man on the environment and the wastefulness of human greed.  Harbest Earth and EM Research Philippines, Inc. will present in detail the action plan on how EM can help clean up the mess in Boracay in the shortest possible time. A lot will change to regain the fresh air, clean beaches, foul-free odor from commercial establishments – resorts, hotels, restaurants, canals and garbage pit.  Households and the Local Government Health and Environmental units will also play a leading role in sustaining the clean-up.  Waste segregation and composting of bio-degradable kitchen wastes shall be a disciplinary action for all.  National government agencies shall review and plan the waste disposal system and apply the most economical EM solution to neutralizing foul odor from waste materials, sanitizing the sea, interiors of kitchen, restaurant and rooms at very low cost.  Local residents will work together to EMPOWER THEMSELVES WITH EM POWER!  Odor are neutralized in seconds!

Why is EM-1 environmental sanitation technology the most economical?

EM stands for Effective Microorganisms.  It is a complex culture of naturally occurring, beneficial organisms such as Photosynthetic (phototrophic) bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and yeasts.  It is a technology to purify and revive nature with the power of living organisms.  EM Technology was developed by Dr. Teruo Higa, professor at the University of the Ryukyus, OkinawaJapan in the 70’s.

EM has a wide range of applications: purifying water and sewage, improving recycled water, solving sanitary problems, and improving the environment.  EM has been effectively used also in agriculture to regenerate soil health, neutralize odor from manure of animals in minutes and convert them to compost for farming, reduce housefly population, clean up fish pond water and neutralize ammonia in pond bottom, and neutralize odor in food production factories and retail markets.  Hotel rooms and toilets are freshened up.  Restaurant dining rooms and kitchens are deodorized in seconds out of their rancid odor.

How much does it costs?  A liter of EM-1 Concentrate can be extended with a kilo of Molasses into thirty liters with non-chlorinated water in seven days.  This EM Activated Solution is further diluted 20 to 50 times to neutralize odor in canals, toilets, kitchen, public markets, garbage pile, piggeries, poultry houses, boats, households and revitalize soil health.  Diluted 100 to 200 times, it neutralizes odor in rooms, supermarkets fresh meat section, boat passenger section and function rooms.  EMAS is applied 1:5,000 liters of waste water or aquaculture pond to remove the odor of canals, pond bottom and improve the health and eating quality of shrimps and fish.   EMAS can clean up kitchen sink drain and dissolved solidified oil or sebo in weeks.  Daily application of EMAS in toilets and kitchen drain prevents the formation of solidified oil and lessen the cleaning up of septic tanks annually.

EMAS cost about P50 pesos.  Diluted 50 to 200 times, the environmental intervention costs P1.00 down to P0.25 per liter.  A liter of EM-1 cost P680.  Molasses brought to Boracay will cost P850 per carbouy of 24 kilos.

You can also produce mud balls which is basically fermented earth with EMAS and carbonized rice hull.  One EM-1 concentrate can be mixed into 5,000 mud balls the size of a baseball.  In MalaysiaJapanChina, the PhilippinesVietnam and Thailand, mudballs are prepared by children and thrown to the polluted river and lakes at one per square meter. After two to three years, dead rivers and lakes are revived. Living organisms, fish, frogs and shells return.  Please read the attached articles to appreciate and believe that this can be done in Boracay and other parts of the Philippines with the DENR leading the way!

Harbest EARTH  stands for Harbest Environmental Action for the Regeneration to Health.  We are ready to educate and train DENR volunteers to bring back the health of Boracay’s world-renowned beaches.
